How to Do Sugar Skull Day of the Dead Makeup


We are fast approaching Dia de los Muertos and I wanted to create a quick video tutorial showing you how to use makeup to create a Sugar Skull face. I used natural white eyeliner from Dr. Hauschka to paint my face in, so no need to use the white grease makeup at stores.

Making Sugar Skull Cookies


Day of the Dead is this weekend and in honor of Day of the Dead I made some sweet treats, including these sugar skull cookies.  I received these cookie cutter/stamps from my sister during the holidays and I have been waiting excitedly to use them and this was the perfect week to. If you love skulls as much as I do you will want to get your hands on these. You can purchase here


The package comes with 4 different classic sugar skull stamps. I made these cookies using my peanut butter cookie recipe. Follow this recipe to make the dough.


Roll out the dough and press the cookie cutter down, face up.


Next, put the cookie cutter face down aligned with the cut you made, as shown above.


After you take them out of the oven, place them on a cookie rack to cool.


These cookies are meant to be decorated. The carvings make it easy to put icing on them, but I think they look great without the icing.


The cookie cutter is very easy to use. One tip I have for you is to make sure the dough is firm and cold which really helps the cookie keep its shape.

Day of the Dead Party


Welcome to my Dia de los Muertos themed party. Dia de los Muertos means Day of the Dead in spanish and it is celebrated on November 1 and November 2. It's celebrated around the world and most notably in Mexico. It is believed that spirits of our loved ones who have passed on visit during these two days of celebration. The day is not meant to be sad or a day of mourning, but instead a celebration of life and a day to remember happy times with those that have passed on.

On Day of the Dead loved ones go to the cemetery to decorate their tombstones and/or they create altars at home. The table I made is a large altar dedicated to family members and friends that died. Altars typically consist of sugar skulls, candles, papel picado, photos of loved ones, objects that represent them or that belonged to them, marigolds, favorite foods and beverages, fresh fruit, water, and salt, among other things that I made sure I added.


For the centerpiece I made a large Sugar Skull Pinata. Want to make your very own? I made a video showing how to make one.


We filled the table with handpainted skulls and marigolds which are known to the the flower of the dead. It is said that on Dia de los Muertos if you leave a trail of marigolds from the grave to your home the spirit of a loved one will follow the trail home.

How to Make a Sugar Skull Pinata


I love making pinatas and love celebrating Day of the Dead, so I combined my love for both and made a Sugar Skull Pinata.

Today, I am going to show you how to make your very own sugar skull pinata and it's muy fácil!

All you need to get started is:
  1. Cardboard
  2. Scissors
  3. Tape
  4. Glue
  5. Streamer paper in white
  6. Construction paper in black, white, and a variety of bright colors

Got .soy? Google launches .soy domain for Hispanic community



When we think of Google, we think of innovation. Google has provided the world with an amazing search engine, google docs, google drive (can't live without it), google hangouts, google glasses, google cars, and the list goes on.

And most recently Google announced the newest domain .soy for the Latino community. Google indicates on their iam.soy site that ".soy is the domain name for Latino identity and expression on the web." And according to Google, the .soy domain, which translates to "I am" in Spanish, is designed to "cater to the growing digital needs of the U.S. Hispanic market, offering brands, publishers, and consumers a place to create, collaborate and share."

There are already supporters of the new domain, including the Hispanic Heritage Foundation and you can find their site at  http://www.yosoy.soy. You can also find Republica on the .soy domain, they are an ad agency focused on the Hispanic and multicultural markets in the U.S, their new domain is: republica.soy.  But do these organizations also own their .com counterpart? It appears that the Hispanic Heritage Foundation does not own yosoy.com, but instead is owned by ISO Technologies and republica.com, it isn't owned by the Ad Agency, but instead is a newspaper in Madrid, Spain. This can be very confusing as most businesses and sites use .com.

Nataly Kelly from the Harvard Business Review blog indicates that "the Hispanic market will represent $1.5 trillion in purchasing power by 2015 and 30% of the U.S population by 2050." She recommends that if a business want to market to the Hispanic community online you will want to build a strategy and that strategy should include creating custom domains for them.

So with the Hispanic community on the rise and companies vying for for their business, businesses began creating sub-pages to market their brands specifically to the Hispanic community. And Google has now created an entire domain dedicated to our ever growing community.

This should make us feel special, but instead of feeling celebrated, I feel a bit segregated. Why do we need an entire domain for our creation and browsing. I understand that finding a unique .com is becoming difficult, but I don't know if this is the answer.

But, this is not the first time the Hispanic community saw something like this. Does anyone remember .UNO? The .UNO domain was introduced in 2013 and it is also for the Hispanic community.


Dot Latin LLC announced that ".UNO is the first global web extension dedicated to Spanish-speaking businesses, consumers and individuals online." Shaul Jolles, Dot Latin LLC CEO, said, "Hispanics will know that every site that ends with .UNO was made with them in mind; .UNO is a culturally relevant domain, easy to remember, and simple to connect."

There are a number of top-level domains other than .com, like .net and .org. When I take a look at that list I find a few spanish domain names that have been introduced in the past few years; .casa, .tienda, .viajes, .moda, and .voto. I had no idea that this many spanish worded domains existed. GoDaddy indicates that .tienda, which means "store" in spanish, is "the perfect domain for any retail business that wants to connect with Spanish-speaking consumers across the globe."

If we look even further back, in 2007, .LAT (for Latino) was a proposed domain by eCOM-LAC. Their goal? Well, similar to Google was to "identify, differentiate, and add value to Internet resources related with Latinos."  And just recently, it was finally announced and approved by ICANN. What is .LAT? ".LAT provides an online hub for the Latino community to share experiences, create forums, find foods, restaurants, and products from native countries, and join community projects to educate others about Latino culture and arts. Sound familiar? To learn the differences between .soy, .uno and now .lat will be surely confusing.

It's true, we use technology, just like other people do, and we might be one of the fastest growing demographic in the U.S, but the Hispanic population is not going to build a community around a specific domain. Hispanic communities are built on culture, family, commonalities that we share, and many other natural and organic reasons.

We build a community online using technology with technology that already exists. I have met so many wonderful people, that happen to be Hispanic or Latinas (whatever you're comfortable with), and many others with different and rich cultures on my blog, different blogs I visit, and other social media platforms.  Our community doesn't need a specific domain for websites that we visit that happen to be Hispanic.

And this begs the question, will Google create a domain specifically for other demographics?

If anything this may confuse people. I naturally am more inclined to visit a .com site than another domain. The other domains available, such as .biz or .net, have not appealed to me in the same way .com has. We all have become familiar with .com.

I am very interested to see if and how people are going to use .soy.  What are your thoughts? Do you think having a domain dedicated to an entire ethnicity is necessary?

chia seeds m&m chocolate chip cookies


I was in the mood for some m&m chocolate chip cookies this morning.  Inspired by all the leaves changing colors, I added some m&ms so in reds, yellows and browns.

But what really make these cookies special was that I also added some sliced almonds and chia seeds. I have been on a chia seed kick lately and have been adding it to everything I eat like yogurt, pancakes, and smoothies.

Chia seeds are a great source of protein among many other benefits. You might have only recently heard about chia seeds, or you might remember the the whole chia pet craze in the 90's, but chia seeds have been an energy source for hundreds of years. Dating back to the Aztecs and Mayans, who used chia seeds as an energy source, but it also provided them much needed protein and fiber. Chia means strength in Mayan.


Just one serving, which is about 1-2 tablespoons contains 4 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber. We should be eating about 25 grams of fiber a day, and most of us don't. Fiber is found in fruits and veggies, and it's important for many reasons,  such as cleaning your intestines/colon and keeping you regular. The fact that a single serving of chia seeds gives you almost half is just amazing.


Ingredients

1 cup of butter, softened
1/2 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cups packed brown sugar
1/2 tablespoon vanilla
1 egg (I used egg whites)
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup of semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup of M&Ms
1/2 cup of sliced almonds (optional)
2 tablespoons of chia seeds (optional)

Instructions

1. Heat oven to 375°F. In large bowl, mix butter, sugars, vanilla and eggs until light and fluffy. Stir in flour, baking soda and salt (dough will be stiff). Stir in chocolate chips and m&ms.
2. On ungreased cookie sheet, drop dough by tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart. ( I put mine on parchment paper)
3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until light brown (centers will be soft). Cool 1 to 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheet to cooling racks.

fall caramelized peach pancakes


My favorite pancakes are chocolate chip or blueberry pancakes, but after a while that got a little boring, and I opened the door to new ideas. I had some frozen peaches and decided that caramelized peaches in pancakes and over them would make a pretty sweet fall breakfast/dessert.


Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter 
  • 1/2 a cup of brown sugar
  • 16 oz bag of frozen peaches (or 2 peaches peeled and cut)


Place butter in pan at medium heat.


Add brown sugar to pan.


Add peaches to pan and mix with brown sugar. Make your favorite pancakes and add these caramelized peaches to them.
